Grumman — 36 Comments

  1. We are searching for more information on a family member who worked for Grumman.
Paul Henton and he was a structural designer of the Lunar Module. Supposedly he designed the thermo protection system. Any info or pictures/ stories would be appreciated

    • Unfortunately, we don’t have any information beyond what you see. Your best bet would be to contact the Cradle of Aviation museum in Long Island.

    • Thanks! I updated the name, leaving a question mark. Sorry for the slow response—family issues (medical) since mid December, but resolved now

  2. The corrections I offered are for the LM-1 photo. Absolutely certain! I worked and drank with these guys for several years.

    • I just made the changes you requested earlier. We tend not to change people that have already been identified, because they’ve usually have been vetted by two or three people.

However, they are vetted per picture—and luckily going over your changes this time I noticed that Ray Russo was also in the LM-4 pic, and he certainly matches the #17 of the LM-1 pic better than #9 we had before. Sorry I didn’t see it before.

  3. I am trying to identify Edward Hansen, who was tall, about 6’3″. No. 16 could be him. Ed didnt wear glasses

    • First, thanks for your help in identifying the people in these photos.
Second, are you talking about the first picture (LM Team 1), or the second (LM Team 4)? My guess is Team 4, per your description, but it could possibly be team 1. Just want to be sure.

We will try to look him up in the Grumman “year book” for you, but can’t give any guarantees. The pictures there are as fuzzy as these, and not everyone is identified.

  4. #19 in LM-1 photo is Neil Warren
#17 in LM-1 photo is Ray Russo
#5 is Frank Fuoto (corrected spelling)

  5. I worked in the chart room at plant 25 with Larry Orlando and Al Goudice. I was working as a job shopper for Grumman through Leighigh Design keeping track of LEM drawings and distributing meeting notices to engineers who worked on the LEM.

  6. My Father, Edward W. Leanza, worked at Grumman in Bethpage from 1966 through the mid-seventies. He was a test engineer on the LEM. I think he might be in the Grumman LM4 Team photo above (the image is so fuzzy…), except the face that could be his (#16) isn’t wearing eyeglasses.

  7. I know that my grandfather John Mazzie worked on the project in bethpage. I was looking for information or Pictures of him.

    • So sorry, we’d love to help, but we don’t have any pictures of or information on the folks that worked at Bethpage—only the ones that worked at KSC.

      • My father was at Bethpage and KSC. John “Jack” Jarrett, logistics engineer. He was also a long distance runner for the navy and Grumman. He is still living down by the cape.

  8. My Father, James E. Hannon worked for Grumman’s in Bethpage and he was on the Procurement
and Contracting of equipment for the LEM.
He worked closely with NASA through Grumman’s to meet and acquire all of the needed Telemetry
    and Communications equipment.

  9. My Dad, Francis (Frank) M. McKinney was a Comm/Radar/Telemetry engineer on all the modules. Worked at the Bethpage plant.

  10. My father Dan Sullivan worked in Bethpage on Grumman Apollo 11 Lunar Module project as an Engineer in the Standards team.

  11. I am interested in any information on Gordon T. Smith who worked as an “Electronics Technician” for Grumman Aircraft in Brevard County, Florida. He died in Brevard County, Fl on July 27, 1968. I think he may have worked on the Apollo lunar module project. He was originally from Hempstead, Nassau County, Long Island, New York.

  12. My father, Kenneth Barnes, was one of the Grumman engineers working at KSC on the Lunar Module for Apollo 11. Are there higher resolution photos or additional photos? I would love to see his face again!

    • We are sorry, we can’t get any that are higher resolution. We talked to Grumman, and for many reasons they can’t release any originals. We can only use the yearbook copies we have here.

      • I have a very clear picture given to me at Grumman while I was at KSC. It is of the LEM 4 test team. I am in the picture. I also worked on the LEM launch team. I also have some Lem training manuals.

  13. No. 22 on the LM 1 photo is my father, Heinz Baumgartner. He was an electrical design engineer who worked on the propulsion system.

  14. My father, John Caldwell, Design Engineer, said that he worked on the design for the LM legs- Grumman Bethpage (later Calverton NY)

    • Hello Jane, Yes, John Caldwell (Uncle John) worked at Grumman in Bethpage on the lunar module program while I worked at Plant 33 in Syosset also on the lunar module program. Later, we worked in Calverton. We both have things that we touched sitting on the moon…how cool is that :-).

  15. I am looking for Curtice Raphael he said he worked on the LM1. He got a job with Grumann in NY after he got out of the Navy around 1966. Would appreciate any information.

    • Pamela, perhaps the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island could point you in the right direction. It is connected with Grumman, and its number is 516-572-4111. It might have a list of former Grumman employees.

  16. Do you have any higher resolution photos of the LM teams? I think my father might be in one of them. Also, if you know the dates that the photos were taken, that would help too.

    Thank you,
    Rob Kalmar

    • The LM 1 team would have been late 1967; LM 4 would have been Jan-Feb 1969. We will see what we can do about the resolution. These were scanned from a Grummon yearbook; the originals were about the resolution you see here.

  17. I’m interested in the LM guidance and navigation software, as well as in the mission simulators software.
Any ideas on how to get the most technical information on these topics?

  18. #19 on team 1 also looks like my father, but if these photos are at Kennedy Space Center, I doubt it’s Frank Noon, I don’t remember him ever being down at Kennedy for work. he was always at Bethpage as far as I know
